Document Summary

Dna = deoxyribonucleic acid = the hereditary molecule. 1953 james watson and francis crick determined the molecule structure of dna. They were awarded the nobel prize in 1962 (with maurice wilkins, but not rosalind franklin) 50 years later, we were able to sequence entire genome. They knew dna was made of a, t, g, c (purines and pyrimidines) they were trying to figure out the 3d structure and had different possible arrangements. It had to be a helix of ~2nm diameter, the only possible arrangement was a-t and g-c. Organizing billions or millions of bp into a nuclear 6um diameter, its 2m long: organizing by compacting around protein (histones) forms nucleosome(contains 8 histones) this determines how they will compact dna, same length between each. Dna replication must occur before mitosis to make an exact copy. Transfer some bacteria to n14 (light) medium; bacterial growth continues.
