By sending chemical messengers that will trigger a signal transduction cascade; steroids are an exception, they need to bind to intracellular receptors; steroids are an exception, do not act as transcription factors on their own. Receptor activation leads to relaying and amplifying the signal inside the cell. When it happens there is a series of events inside the cell that serves to orient the response the target cell will take according to the message it receives. We already introduced the different types of receptors so now we have see how the cell interprets that message and relays it. If they meet their receptor in the cytosol that complex will travel inside the nucleus, if it binds inside the nucleus it is already there --> no need to travel. When that complex that acts as a transcription factor finds its response element, the sequence on its dna and the regulatory head of the gene.
