A biproduct of this is oxygen, so oxygen begins to accumulate. This only occurred once so whole ocean was dominated by this type of bacteria. Oxygen was toxic to other organisms, so they escaped to the bottoms of the oceans (to hot springs). Oxygen got absorbed by minerals, major period of continent formation.
