Document Summary

Sieve tube members: connected end to end by pits between them which transport water. Eudicot vascular bundles: form a circle, outer cortex, inner pith. Monocot vascular bundles: scattered throughout ground tissue of stem. Growth in plants: determinate growth common in animals. Indeterminate growth in plants: plant grows throughout life, meristems give rise to plant body, why would this be adaptive, plasticity of growth gives some flexibility since plants cannot move around. Primary growth: apical meristems at root and shoot tips, self perpetuating clusters of cells. Secondary growth: outward growth, lateral meristems at root and shoot tips, self perpetuating cylinder of tissue. Stems: organized into modular segments, nodes: where leaves are attached. Internodes: between nodes: terminals buds: at apex of main shoot, lateral buds: in leaf axils, produce branches, some stems are above ground and some are below ground. Tendrils: leaf tendrils are an example of convergent evolution. Tendrils of plants and spines of a cactus are examples of homologous structures.
