Document Summary

Bacteria: most abundant and diverse, adaptable, prokaryote. Ribosomes in eukaryotes can be free floating in cytosol, or attached to endoplasmic reticulum (er) for translation in all cells: a second type can be found in mitochondria, a third type can be found in chloroplasts, macromolecular machines. Rough: ribosomes studded, makes proteins that become part of many cell membranes or are released from cell. Smooth: synthesizes lipids and is the site of many other essential cellular functions. Vesicular traffic: proteins made by er, vesicles from er transport finished proteins, golgi receives vesicles and secretes secretory vesicles, sv"s fuse through the (cid:272)ell (cid:373)e(cid:373)(cid:271)ra(cid:374)e (exocytosis) Exocytosis: transporting materials between the compartments of the endo membrane system.
