Document Summary

Lecture 16: chapter 5, evolution of populations continued. Darwin was the first to formulate the concept. A form of evolution in which individuals that possess some specific hereditary traits are more likely to find partners than others. Generally in nature, males are the ones that need to attract females with a certain trait: this is because females have more gametes to give. 2 types of sexual selection: intersexual vs intrasexual. Test: they let male birds go to their territories, and display their traits to attract females. Created 3 groups of tails: 1. control group, 2. cut off tails of the birds, 3. glued the cut off tails onto the birds in this group. Then they released the males and females back into their territories. Results were obvious: females chose males with longer tails. To females, longer tails reflect better health of the males: ex; red cap bird.
