Chapter 4 reviewing the scholarly literature and planning a study. Literature review: carefully crafted summary of the recent studies conducted on a topic that includes key findings and methods researchers used while making sure to document the sources. Scholarly journals (find a meta- (cid:396)e(cid:448)ie(cid:449) o(cid:396) s(cid:272)opi(cid:374)g (cid:396)e(cid:448)ie(cid:449), a(cid:374)d (cid:455)ou"(cid:396)e i(cid:374) good sta(cid:396)ti(cid:374)g form: peer review journals. Most scientists regarded the new streamlined peer-review process as quite an improvement. Can find an editor who is an expert in the field (accuracy) Other literature sources: books, dissertations (dissertation abstracts, government documents, policy reports, other types of periodicals (ex. Goals: to demonstrate familiarity with a body of knowledge and establish credibility. Common problems: do(cid:374)"t o(cid:448)e(cid:396) (cid:395)uote, annotated bibliography instead of a review, failure to synthesis. Not showing the overall themes: quantity over quality. The annotated bibliography: different from a literature review. Bad literature review: (cid:862)marsden (2010) conducted a study on racial profiling in one canadian city.
