Equilibrium is the normal state of society (everything works in harmony) After a disturbance, all other parts bring things back to normal (homeostasis) What keeps society together, source of unhappiness. If one stops functioning, the rest of the system falls apart. Social facts: shared morality among community, reality genesis. Anomie: lack of morality, state of broken social solidarity. The fall of institutions that leads personal problems too. Looked at suicide rates, believed consistent all over europe. 4 types of suicide: anomic, egoist, fatalistic, altruistic everything in society is functional. Manifest: what a law wishes to do, intentional function. Assumption: forces operating in society within particular subcultures push many of their members into criminal behaviour patterns. Social disorganization: institution of society has fallen apart (certain neighbourhoods or communities) Unstable neighbourhoods: transient, residential and business, changing neighbourhood, cannot provide essential services. 2 tyes of social disorganized theory: concentric zone, ecological school. Strain theory: merton: goal is to collect material goods.
