Week 6 (Mini Lec #3): Radio
Wireless Telegraphy
-Number of people, including Marconi, deserve credit for this invention; Italian
gov’t not interested so they move to England and sell radio equip to British army,
navy and shippers
-Overcomes the limits of electric telegraphy
-Used in shipping industry w/ some military applications
-US allows radio, telegraphy and telephone to develop privately; Other countries
regulate
-Signal Hill, Newfoundland is where the first transatlantic broadcasts were made
Development of Radio
-Wireless telegraphy requires ‘syntony’ the ability to focus the signal from
transmitter to receiver
-With wireless signals spread in 360°, this allows for wireless telegraphy to
develop into radio
-How is the voice added to wireless telegraphy? What are the early challenges?
Early Radio
-First radio station - KDKA (first radio station) in Pittsburgh in 1920
-Rapid growth - in 1923, more than 2 million people listened to the radio on more
than 500 stations; in 1923, there were more than 500,000 radio sets; in 1925,
there were 2 mil. radio sets
-Corporations saw this new medium as a money maker
-Role of advertising initially through sponsoring programs
-A medium for disseminating info from the few to the many
-Programming varied from adaptations of film and novels
-News programming
Powerful programming
-Amos ‘n’ Andy, the first sitcom
-FDR’s fireside chats
-Edward R. Murrow’s broadcasts from London during WWII
-War of the Worlds in 1938
-Hindenburg
Radio Adaps
-Transistor radios
-FM radio
-Disc jockeys
