An expressed struggle that inevitably occurs between at least 2 interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce rewards, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals. Dysfunctional conflict: outcomes fall short of what is possible and have a damaging effect on relationship. Functional conflict: achieve best possible outcome ad strengthen relationship. Polarization: partners underestimate commonalities shared and miss areas of agreement and goodwill. Integration: partners recognize legitimacy of other persons concerns. Gender: individual style of each communicator is more important than their sex in shaping how they handle conflict. Culture: variations from one culture to another on how people communicate during conflicts. Do not hesitate to use aggressive behaviour to resolve conflict. Advantage: if their decision is correct, a better decision without compromise can result. Disadvantage: creates hostility and resentment towards shark. Others are likely to take advantage of you. Rather hide and ignore conflict than resolve it. Uncooperative, unassertive, give up personal goals, passive.
