Document Summary

Support/protect neurons: structural support, regulate nutrients, repair neural tissue. Form myelin sheath around axons more efficient information. Outer layer of the brain: contains 70-90% of brain cells. Parietal lobes: sensory information (smell, touch, taste), spatial information. Frontal lobes: emotion, regulation, planning, organizing, integrating information from other areas. Sensory information tends to be processed by opposite side of brain. Strongest evidence for hemisphereic specialization comes from lesion sides: speech processing: lh, face processing: rh. Hemispheric specialization more complicated than it"s often described. Birth migration axon growth dendrite growth neuron specialization. 25% of body weight @ 9 weeks gestation, 10% for newborn, 2% for adults. Myelin sheath insulates axons: insulates and improves conductivity. Rapid during 1st and 2nd years, continues into adulthood. Believed to lead to improvements in brain function. Creation of new connections b/w neurons: thousands of connections for each neuron. Neuronal death: when new synapse forms, some nearby neurons die. Elimination of unnecessary or weaker synaptic connections.
