Problem of individual is a symptom of dysfunctional interactions within a social system. Though effects might be inflated by publication bias. Need for more evidence-based approach in psychotherapy. Most prevalent form of treatment of mental disorders. Brain chemicals that communicate info between nerve cells. Side effects: dry mouth, constipation, sexual dysfunction, drowsiness, blurred vision, increased heart rate. As effective w/fewer side effects (but still headaches, nausea, low sex drive) Mania from excess or dysregulation of dopamine. Treatment most effective when continuous and for mania. Fast acting, but not good for long term management. Klonopin: social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder. Decreasing dopamine transmission by blocking postsynaptic dopamine receptors. Delayed effectiveness (roughly 2-3 weeks for delusions) Unpleasant & harmful side effects (tardive dyskinesia) Does not produce tardive dyskinesia as a side effect. Elevated risk of death in elderly with dementia. But 1-2% chance of developing a low white blood cell count. Inconsistent effects of drug treatment on negative symptoms.
