Fast acting, but not good for long term management. Klonopin: social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder. Decreasing dopamine transmission by blocking postsynaptic dopamine receptors. Delayed effectiveness (roughly 2-3 weeks for delusions) Unpleasant & harmful side effects (tardive dyskinesia) Does not produce tardive dyskinesia as a side effect. Elevated risk of death in elderly with dementia. But 1-2% chance of developing a low white blood cell count. Inconsistent effects of drug treatment on negative symptoms.
