Document Summary
If enough inputs coming into the dendrites the axon may generate an output. Mature neurons generally don"t divide (now evidence that some in hippocampus might) Provides rooms for more connections to other neurons. One axon per cell, 2 distinct parts. Long tube like- branches connect with dendrites. Like a bare copper wire- shocks you, signal wouldn"t go where it was supposed to. Insulates neuron- keeps the signal going to where it is supposed to. Not on all the neurons in cns, but on those in the pns. Evidence that there is talk between the neuron and glial cell. Ion movement in and out na+, cl- through ion channels in the membrane. Molecular message sent to neighbouring, travels along neuron. Na+ gates open, na+ rushes in, inside becomes positive. Na gates close, k+ leaves- becomes more negative (refractory period, neuron cannot fire during this period) Neurotransmitters are released at the axon terminals. Na+ responsible for depolarization, k+ responsible for repolarization.
