If enough inputs the cells axon may generate an output. Provides room for more connections to other neurons. One axon per cell, 2 distinct parts. Think of it as insulation/casing on axon, acts as insulator. When present increases the speed of neural signals down the axon. *neurons communicate by means of an electrical signal called the action potential. *action potentials are based on movements of ions between the outside and inside of the cell. *when an action potential occurs a molecular message is sent to neighbouring neurons. Ion channels and ion transporters regulate the number of ions inside and outside the axon. If a portion is stimulated beyond its threshold, it brie y reverses polarity. Neurotransmitters are released at the axon terminals. Inhibitory signal and exhibitory signals are not big enough. The signal does not go upside down naturally. * depolarization is the lead edge of the action potential. The neural signal is a moving change in ion concentration.
