Document Summary
The brain at birth: around 86 million neurons, grows about 5 times between birth, approximately 80% adult size at only age 2, growth of support sells, myelination, synaptic connections. 38 weeks gestation to end of first year. Synaptic pruning: maturation and experience, our brains respond to our experiences infants can discriminate amongst sounds that humans make. Languages are easier to learn at an early age because we"re able to discriminate against sounds. The structure of our brain/ amount of neurons in our brain is influenced by our experiences/environment: use it or lose it, regulatory pruning. Large-scale: neurons will be broken down or built based on your experiences, connections that are not necessary are pruned (don"t serve a function in adults) Ex: people with paralysis have a higher rate of neurogenesis during recovery. Plasticity: your brain is good at modifying itself. Adults have less of this ability vs kids: brain is able to modify itself, experience, damage, neurogenesis.
