Document Summary
Describe the process by which the spinal cord is developed. Describe the sections of the brain at 4 weeks gestation and how they develop into the adult brain. Describe the characteristics of the infant brain at birth and the changes that occur in its growth to adulthood. Define and describe synaptic pruning and neurogenesis. Start out with flat plate of cells (neural plate) As development happens, it folds to form neural fold. Neural tube is basis of entire central nervous system. Ends of neural fold must fuse together properly. Aka the forebrain the midbrain and the hindbrain. More # of neurons does not account for growth of brain. Grows about 5x b/w birth and adulthood. Approximately 80% adult size at age 2. Growth of support cells massive increase. Synaptic connections growing new connections as we learn things. Why kids eat more fat (ie. 2% milk, not lean meat increases insulation in myelination ?????)
