A common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how one feels, thinks and acts. The depressed individual feels sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Depression leads to a variety of emotional and physical problems that decrease a person"s ability to function at work and at home. Appetite changes (weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting) Sleep issues (trouble sleeping or sleeping too much) Increase in purposeless physical activity (e. g. handwringing or pacing) Slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others) Certain medical conditions may mimic the above symptoms (need to be rule out) Women (15-44 years old) bear the greatest burden. Depression can strike at any time , but usually in late teens to mid-20s. At any given time, approximately 1 in 20 canadians suffer from clinical depression. Painful waves occur intermixed with positive memories of deceased.
