Amyloid : metabolic waste products present in the fluid between brain cells. Abnormal aggregation of the tau proteins formation of tangles within nerve cells degeneration of neurons. Tau proteins : help lengthen and support microtubule structures. Cognitive impairment that is sufficient to interfere with adl and functioning. Progressive, deteriorating illness, where treatment is based on the stage of the illness. Differs from mild cognitive impairment, where it does not interfere with independence in activities of daily living. Adults > 65 years old affected the most.
