Cognitive: degeneration of cerebral cortex, alzheimer"s and dementia. At age 75 we see a significant increase in prevalence. Women typically live longer than men, see it more in females because of this (depending on how they defined the number of percentage) Familial (early onset): mutations/duplications in amyloid precursor protein (app) or presenilin 1 or 2. Cleavage of amyloid proteins, if changed less cleavage and amyloid plaques can form. Trisomy 21 association where app gene is located. Average life expectancy is 45-50, 45% of people with down- syndrome develop alzheimer"s: app plaque accumulation seen as early as age 7, treatments. No cure, drugs to decrease the symptoms. Perhaps we can over the blockage of synapses.
