NEST 319 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: First Babylonian Dynasty, Zagros Mountains, Enlil
Document Summary
Mesopotamian kingdoms of the 2nd millennium bce: kassites, hurrians, hittites and assyrians. 1595 bce --> when old babylonian period was sacked by hittites (under the reign of mursilis) However, the hittites did not take control of babylonia, but they went back to southern mesopotamia due to their own political conflict. This lead to southern mesopotamia going in a dark age for 180 years --> due to the destruction of the war. 1450 bce --> a new group in southern mesopotamia arose, they established themselves as a new ruling dynasty/kingdom. Kassites (1415-1155 bce) --> their origins are unknown, they may be from the zagros mountains in the east. They are mentioned in texts since the old babylonian period, but as mercenaries or serving in the army. Might possibly be tribal groups which moved downwards. They spoke in a different language and is sometimes misunderstood (varies largely from sumerian) Thus they adopted a babylonian dialect of akkadian.
