Ashur was the name of the patron deity. Temple of isthar: rst example of stratigraphic exploration. Structures: assur temple, anu-adad temple, temple of isthar, ziggurat. Excavate one layer, record everything, remove it to look at the next phase. Excavations of assur were among the rst to systematically probe the stratigraphic history of a site and it"s building/occupation phases. Laid out trenches at regular intervals across the site to see regular, common places. Wanted to understand non-elite architecture and objects of the ancient people of. Great achievement - at the time, others just focused on temples and palaces.
