Uruk period (4000-3200 bc): when the first urban sites appear. Early dynastic period (3200-2350 bc): when a series of city-states dvlped din southern meso. Series of temples built atop one another, dedicated to enki (water god) Offering to the god consist of fish. Temples were key part of origin of complex society. Priests and admins oversaw land & labour management, food distribution, & ritual. Burials often contained grave goods (incl. figurines w/ lizard heads) Uruk is oldest known city in the world.
