GEOG 345 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Erving Goffman, Performativity, Judith Butler
Document Summary
Erving goffman --> a professor that wrote major contributions to sociology. Presentation of self in everyday life: he proposed that we think of social life as a drama/as a performance (not like a performance, but as a performance) Performance: all the activity (including expressions and gestures) of a given participant on a given occasion which serves to influence in any way any of the other participants. Performance is also executed by scripts --> scripts are essentially. Typically, we divide the stage by two regions: Front region: the zone of sanctioned and expected performance --> essentially the performance people. Expect to see, it is not one which is to shock the audience because it is expected and routinely ordinary. Back region: the "backstage" where public performances are often trashed and contradicted (from the front region) You go through all kinds of performances in order to make your audience happy your audience happy. Performances would differ, but still they are all performances.
