Document Summary
Soil components: mineral fracion, organic mater, soil air, soil water. Soil: uppermost layer of the earth"s crust/lithosphere: dynamic natural material composed of ine minerals and organic paricals, pedology: soil science, study of soils. Rock gets broken up by diferent means, become rock fragments. Classiied according to changes in physical or chemical composiion over ime. Primary minerals: relaively large, unaltered compounds(silicon/oxygen), same as bedrock. Secondary minerals: relaively small, result of chemical weathering or mineral alteraion. Soil texture = paricle size distribuion: gravel, sand, slit, clay, colloids. Determines space between paricles for water to move. Texture classes through: combinaion of sand, slit and clay, field: hand texturing and the taste test , lab: determine % and soil texture triangle. Soil structure: bound by clays/colloids to form peds , structure describes the shape when individual grains aggregate, four basic structures. Be able to describe them and their inluence on low of soil, water and air. Parially decayed remains of plants and animals.
