They are products of destructive and synthetic forces --> the combination of both causes soil formation. Synthetic: such as the formation of secondary clay minerals, layers. They are alive, have internally structured layers or horizons (horizons can be categorized into a, b, c) Soil systems act as a habitat for organisms. Essentially they provide a habitat for all the ecosystems beneath our feet --> in one handful there are billions of organisms and thousands of species. Soil also acts as a medium for plant growth --> they supply water, oxygen, mineral nutrients in their solution. Mineral nutrients: of the 92 mineral elements, 17 are essential (plants can"t grow without essential elements) and the majority of these nutrients are supplied by soil.
