Document Summary

Mutation reduces gene flow between mutant & normal, or wild-type individuals. Why? b/c mutant individuals have more than 2 sets of chromosomes. Occurs when an error in meiosis or mitosis results in doubling of chromosome # Polyploidy individuals are genetically isolated from original diploid populations. Natural selection for traits that isolate population. A geographic area where interbreeding occurs & hybrid offspring are common. Can be narrow or wide, and long or short lived descendants. Clade- a group of organisms that share a most recent ancestor of all of its members and all. Macroevolution- patterns of evolution above the scale of a single species. Chapter 27 phylogenies and the history of life. A named group of organisms, not necessarily a clade, but linked by shared physical or genetic characteristics. Lineage- any continuous line of descent; any series of organisms connected by reproduction by parent of offspring. Start anywhere and follow to tip will be lineage; so a line of descent.
