ARTH 319 Lecture 7 Continuation of last lecture
*Prof. Cooper mentioned a AIA Lecture happening sometime soon by James
Osborne in Buchanan.
*Club presentation about Art History Student Association.
Con’t from last class:
Just because Jericho is an Oasis today, it doesn’t mean that back then it was as
arid.
Discussion about change. And whether the motivation to do something brings
change or change prompts the motivation to do something.
Braidwood was known for bringing in specialists such as paleobotanist, people who
looked at animal bones, and paleoclimatologists etc.
Bestansur, (not far from Jarmo) site yields rich archaeological remains. Near the Iran
border, it’s a mounted site. They placed trenches in and found some evidence for
neolithic occupation. Square #10 was initially thought to be absent of neolithic
remains but they extended the trench deeper and found many evidence.
Analyzed soil content (high amount of phosphates-animal dung) penning animals
(domesticated animals) to confirm those suspicious, spot samples of soil were done
and under the microscope, and dung spherulites were found (from cows).
The zooarchaeologist, analyzed animal bones and found evidence of domesticated
goat (but not sheep yet)
A tiny vertebra was found of a house mouse. This raised the question, was the site a
settled area? Because “house” mice implies that they were living in houses.
At first, only living/working surfaces were found and not walls. The area is very
difficult to excavate and there was no use of mudbrick, just pressed mud so it was
hard to find the wall line.
The “House of the Dead” slide (birds eye view) used photogrammetry (splicing
together hundreds of different photographs to produce one). There were a lot of
human remains found buried into the floors and walls.
Note: although we call this place a “House” it doesn’t imply an actual living space for
domestic use.
*Ended with a panel discussion from the first report.
It’d be best to read the article even if you did not report on it.
