There are big categories that do not fit into what we talk about (eg. eating disorders, substance abuse) We talk about the issue that some people don"t want to get treatment, etc. Things that are untrue, but the person strongly believes them. The person"s thoughts and words don"t make sense. Sensation that one has that isn"t a part of reality: negative symptoms. Flat affect no emotional reaction to everything sometimes the wrong emotion for the situation actions are often repetitive, or something like catatonic. They used to diagnose the types by the symptoms, so it can be a combination. Not useful to characterize them: explanations. There is a specific gene that trims the connections in the frontal lobe of the brain. Dopamine sometimes helps with the positive symptoms, but has serious side effects. Comes out in a genetic component and stressful life experiences. Eg. soldiers are more likely to develop schiz.
