When low, filter likely to be at end (after recognition) ex: watching tv. *can only remember things by paying attention to them. Participants were asked to listen to a conversation and do one of three things: identify how many times a particular word was used, describe the subject of the conversation, both. Those who were asked to do both were the least accurate in their responses; due to divided attention memory was impaired. When you are next up for a presentation, you are mentally busy.
