Document Summary

Dialogue - characters speak to each other. We seem more concerned with monologue; we do not listen to what others are saying. Helps both parties to understand motives and positions. Shows us what rules we are using in communication. Rule to defend yourself when you are being attacked verbally. Dialogue attempts to disregard new rules and try new ones. It is dif cult for people to listen. We are used to ghting, defending, blaming and persuading. Risk disclosure, having to say personal things. Make sure everyone agrees on the dialogue ground rules. Good face work - make people feel honoured, valid and respected (take them seriously, acknowledge them) Make sure the participants feel ready for dialogue. Nd a shared level of comfort (different structures, analytical vs deep, formal vs informal ect) Give participants a way out if they do not wish to talk deeper about an issue.
