Document Summary

If someone invades our territory", we feel that we need to defend it: we get upset/uncomfortable. People extend this defensive mechanism to personal space. We form an (cid:834)egocentric bubble(cid:835) of personal space (e. hall, 1959): there"s this invisible bubble that we walk around in, places where people invade our space: In a suit fitting people going in your personal space, a tailor is invading that bubble: the airport violated space, it"s a relatively new occurrence. I"ll try to move away, take a step back: their personal space might be smaller(if i step back, and they step in closer) We feel awkward when a handshake lasts a moment too long. There are all kinds of situations where you might feel threatened, we can"t have a good conversation if our personal space is threatened. Our invisible personal bubble excludes all but intimate and trusted friends: we don"t let a lot of people in the bubble, professionals who have to approach us intimately.
