BIOL355 Lecture Notes - Lecture 34: Bisphosphonate, Fibrous Joint, Denosumab
Document Summary
Calcium increase levels of calcium in diet. Decrease ability to absorb ca w/ aging. 400-800 units/day supplements so decrease exposure to sun. Decrease in estrogen level -> more susceptible to pth. Binds to osteoblasts to prolong their lifespan suppresses osteoclast formation induces apoptosis in osteoclasts slows bone loss, but does not replace bone already lost increase risk of uterine cancer, breast cancer, and blood clots. Weight bearing activities as early as possible slows rate of ca loss. Minimize salty foods such as canned soups and processed meats. Bisphosphonates -> impregnate bones and cause osteoclast apoptosis. Pharmacologically active only while on exposed bone surfaces inhibit osteoclasts inhibit bone mineralization at sufficient doses (remain bound in bone matrix for yrs) Much more promising than hrt: found to decrease bone fractures at spine, hip and wrist by 50% over 3 yrs. E. g. ulcers in the esophagus, acid reflux, and nausea.
