BIOL355 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hyaline Cartilage, Synovial Membrane
Document Summary
Osteoarthritis: severe erosion of the joint surface. Most common form of arthritis (adults more common women) 75% of those 75+ will have oa. Associated pain, swelling, in at leat on ejoint tender joints (tissues, ligaments, tendons, muscles) Mostly weight bearing joints theory: wear and tear disease. W/ increased age, decreasing in the formation of new cartilage; more hyaline cartilage is destroyed than replaced. Deterioration of articular cartilage, cushioning lost, friction increases cartilage frays, fragments of cartilage released into joint space. As progressing, cartilage lost and exposes bone surface, and rub against bone -> new outgrowths of bone (bony spurs), growth of bone into synovial cavity, limiting joint movement -> pain, stiffness increasing. When become severe, the joints seize, bone surfaces will fuse and become immobile, causes friction, inflammation and pain. Natural aging disease as reduced circulation to joint degenerates cartilage more often in elderly.
