Consequences --- end up lacking efficiency (mcdonald"s may have long lineups, cold or reheated food, etc); people end up in prison for nonviolent offences = overcrowded prisons, backlogged courts, ineffective policies. New objectives (want efficiency, move people thru faster) New techniques (new punishments ex electr. monitoring) California (strikes 1 & 2 are felonies, 3rd can be any crime), man sentenced to 25yrs for stealing a slice of pizza escalating crimes bc people don"t want 3rd strike. Probation one of the most common punishments in canada out but under supervision of an officer (probation & parole officer = 2 roles of same job), max. of 3yrs. May be combined w community service hrs and/or fines if you go to prison, you may still be placed on probation afterwards. May include electronic monitoring sentence served at home.
