SOC 1100 Lecture 1: SOC 1100 Tutorial #1
Document Summary
According to canadian sociologist reginald bibby, religious interest influences canadians on a national scale. The way canadians perceive religion represents the structural-functional perspective, scientific sociology, and quantitative data. Although religious attendance in canada has declined since 1945, Bibby notes that: 84 percent believe that god exists, 73 percent have spiritual needs (macionis, gerber, 2014, p 494). This is a key aspect of social structure because despite declining attendance rates, many canadians still associate themselves with religion and beliefs. This shows a relatively stable pattern of social behaviour (macionis, gerber, 2014, p 15), as defined by social structure. Structural-function perspective is also existent as religious beliefs give these canadians value and ethic in their lives, ultimately keeping their families and the society functional, working. Together to promote solidarity and stability (macionis, gerber, 2014, p 15).
