The levittowners: ways of life and politics in a new suburban community by. Herbert gans (1965: participant observation, to understand the social structure, social order of a newly built suburbs. Power relations: social change, rather than descriptive matters. Everyone has a different social reality and this is what they try to capture with an ethnography. As ideal types: complete participant, complete observer, participant as observer, observer as participant, not mutually exclusive, can be blended, each have advantages, disadvantages, ethics must be considered. Ideal types = max weber(cid:495)s notion to explain a pure form of an idea. Accessing students in university as a university student vs. Accessing an underground biker gang as a university student. Gaining access: gate keepers = leaders within your group of study; can grant or deny access to the group; can have formal/informal authority, eg. Once you have access: first impressions are important!
