Selects cases gradually, with the specific content determining whether it is chosen. Researcher typically doesn"t have a very strong knowledge of the population that they are studying. Associated with qualitative methods interests are not to collect numerical data or generalize to the population, but rather to gain understanding. Haphazard collected sample out of convenience or by accident: cheapest, easiest design to administer. Quota ensures certain quotas are met, but then relies on haphazard: example wanting 50/50 male/female ratio. Sequential sampling basically the same as purposive, but researcher analyzes data while taking it, and stops collecting it when they decide that the additional amount of info they will get will not contribute to the study. Snowball collects data then uses referrals or networks to draw more samples (want people that are interconnected within network displayed in a sociogram) Researcher typically has a knowledge of the population.
