SOAN 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Sampling Frame, Stratified Sampling, Deeper Understanding
Document Summary
Researcher typically doesn"t have a very strong knowledge of the populaion that they are studying. Associated with qualitaive methods interests are not to collect numerical data or generalize to the populaion, but rather to gain understanding. Haphazard collected sample out of convenience or by accident: cheapest, easiest design to administer. Quota ensures certain quotas are met, but then relies on haphazard: example waning 50/50 male/female raio. Sequenial sampling basically the same as purposive, but researcher analyzes data while taking it, and stops collecing it when they decide that the addiional amount of info they will get will not contribute to the study. Snowball collects data then uses referrals or networks to draw more samples (want people that are interconnected within network displayed in a sociogram) Researcher typically has a knowledge of the populaion. Associated with quanitaive methods goal is to make inferences to some unknown populaion parameters. Deals with populaions, elements, and sampling frames: populaion boundaries.
