SOAN 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Random Number Generation, Simple Random Sample, Stratified Sampling
Document Summary
Objecives for today"s class: understand the diferent types of qualitaive and quanitaive sampling techniques, prepare you for the inal exam. Nonprobability sampling (associated with qualitaive: sample size in advance, random, mathemaical theory, knowledge of populaion. Quota: ensures certain quotas are met, but then relies on haphazard. Purposive: researcher uses judgment to select cases with a speciic purpose in mind. The purpose is less to generalize to the larger populaion, and more to gain a deeper understanding of speciic types: examples: diicult-to-reach populaions (hidden populaions: prositutes, homeless people, go to places where they can be found. The researcher will go to the speciic locaion of that hidden populaion: collect as many cases as possible. Researcher coninues sampling unil all resources (ime inancial, and energy) are exhausted. You interview as many people as you possible can unil all your resources are eliminated. Sequenial sampling: similar to purposive sampling, but the researcher stops when the amount addiional informaion is small or negligible.
