A learned afecive response to an object or acivity: things that we are interested in elicit posiive feelings, things in which we have no interest in elicit litle afect, apathy, or even aversion. Interests are not the same as abiliies: measures of abiliies tend to predict performance or proiciency, whereas measures of interests are related to saisfacion of persistence. Applicaions of interests measures have been linked almost exclusively to vocaional counseling. Actuarial approach: compares a persons" interests with those of members of speciic groups and atempts to predict saisfacion with various aciviies or occupaions. Designed to help people understand their interests, in order to promote beter performance, greater producivity, and greater job saisfacion. Item format: 5-point (likert-type) response format, current version has 291 items for measuring preferences for occupaions, school subjects, work-related aciviies, leisure aciviies, personal characterisics, and personal preferences.
