A learned affective response to an object or activity: things that we are interested in elicit positive feelings, things in which we have no interest in elicit little affect, apathy or even aversion. Interests are not the same as abilities: measures of abilities tend to predict performance or proficiency, whereas measures of interests are related to satisfaction or persistence. Applications of interest measures have been linked almost exclusively to vocational counseling. Actuarial approach: compares a person"s interests with those of members of specific groups and attempts to predict satisfaction with various activities or occupations.
