Document Summary

1. what is consciousness: refers to a persons subjective awareness of internal and external stimuli (thoughts, perceptions, experiences, and self-awareness. Psychological variations: sensory deprivations (don"t know which ways up or down), hypnosis, mindfulness meditation: sleep and dreams. Awake and active: beta waves - high frequency low amplitude, often irregular waves, 13-30 cps. Awake and calm (drowsy): alpha waves - relatively high frequency & low amplitude (less frequent and more amplitude than beta, also more regular, 8-12 cps, very relaxed. Stage 1 and 2: waves of larger amplitude, slow, and regular called theta waves, also observed during daydreams, in second stage have spindles (bursts of activity) and a k complex. Stage 3 and 4: during deep sleep the brain actively slows, waves of high amplitude, very slow & regular called delta waves. Variation within 90 minute cycles: time in stage 4 decreases, time in rem increases.
