After a decade of the tough on crime policies, the number of incarcerated people have increased only marginally. However, these policies have resulted in a significant influx of indigenous and black individuals being sent to prison while the caucasian percentage has gone significantly down. Goffman total institutions: we should care about the people in prison because it could impact the likeliness of them reoffending. In 2015, 180 days the prison was locked down this is half the year these people suffered. Office of the correctional investigator 2016 report: overall increase in use of force incidents, racialized individuals and those with mental health issues are overrepresented, pepper spray has increasingly replaced verbal de-escalation/conflict resolution. Indigenous, mental health patients and black people were over represented here. 3: ramen is a big commodity in prisons it can get you anything that you need (ex: favors, items) 2018 strike: the 2018 strike was a response to warehousing, deplorable conditions and forced labour in prisons.
