Final paper (due march 23rd) 30: choice of 3-4 topics, 1500-1750 words, academic research required. Midterm exam (february 16th) 25: multiple choice and short answer, readings and lectures. Final exam (april 22nd) 30: multiple choice and short answer, reading and lectures, cumulative. Email policy: proper rules of grammar apply, email is not a substitute for readings/syllabus. Office hours weds 1:30-3:30: 534 mackinnon or appointment. Weeks 1-3: historical/political: patriation, early scholarly debates. Weeks 4-10: supreme court cases: sections 1-7 and 15: recent scc decisions. Weeks 11-12: society and scholarship: the charter and the scc in 2015. Week 2: legitimacy and activism debates: early normative charter debates, role of judicial review in a democracy, limitation on judicial powers. Week 3: dialogue and s. 33: relationship b/w courts and legislatures.
