Document Summary

Thrasymachus def of justice: justice is the advantage of the. Plato will spend the rest of the republic trying to respond to. He begins with a dilemma: justice and power appear to be in. Great power seems to limit the possibility of justice. Justice seems to require personal integrity and the ability to define one"s own life. Power enables an individual to influence the life of others. Power in large tends to only happen when leaders can enforce a will onto others (influencing them in a good or bad way) which is why justice and power are incompatible. One mans justice is another mans tyranny. Justice for one person may be bad for the other. Justice might mask ideologists that may turn out to be local interests. Morgenthau is making thrasymachus"s view in this book saying that its only power that wins there is no justice. Power is generally objective and clear according to morgenthau.
