Document Summary

The first real philosopher in ancient grease, thales started, he used lots of metaphysics without explaining it (he said all things are made of gods and that magnets have a soul) We have no record of explanation, his work didn"t survive. Atlas keeps the world from falling, thales thought it floated on top of water, thales is less mythological, but still unimaginative, anaximander is different. Pg. 18=line 17, more scientific; earth is at the center and has gravitational pull from the sun keeps earth from falling into equal forces in every direction and so it won"t move. Centrifugal force (fleeing the center) if something is moving in a circular motion, there is force pushing you outwards. We know earth is in motion, and it is not the center of the universe. Anaximander didn"t know that but he figured out equilibrium without the tools we have today. Gravity and centrifugal force create an equilibrium, so he was almost right.
