PHIL 2140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Anaximander, Airgas, Atomism
Document Summary
Ancient greece (4 elements=4types of matter): air=gas, fire=energy etc ) There was reason behind it so the four humours were not unreasonable. Greek medicine came out of it and it is the closest thing that they had to science today (science understands the world to manipulate it, mathematical principals and technology which allows you to change things. If you say the earth is made up of air, earth, fire and water then you can"t really change it or do much with it. The greeks wanted to understand the world, but not change it. Medicine does change and that"s why it"s close to science. The principals that medicine was based on is powerful, he is an outlier. Cultures have people who are different, so when you are comparing cultures you are comparing most people to most people. Empedocles was a future thinker and an exception. Greece as a whole did not think about science the way.
