Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone, produced by the beta cells of the pancreas, which helps the body use sugar for energy. The pancreas makes insulin, but the insulin made does not work as it should. What does insulin do? cells (muscle cells, fat cells). Inhibits glycogenolysis (break down glycogen to produce glucose) and gluconeogenesis (breakdown of stored fat and protein to make glucose). Promotes energy storage (glycogen and fat production) and building of body tissues (protein) increases protein sythensis.
