Core countries made parts of the periphery to specialize in production (usually in primary commodity) Not allowed to compete with producers in the core country. Process of globalization was interrupted by ww1, the great depression, and ww2. Left european colonial powers in a very weakened state militarily and economically. Colonies were no longer an asset, but were now a liability. Colonialism came to an end at the end of ww2 (1945) 1950s and 1960s many former colonial territories because independent countries. These ex-colonies embarked on industrialization programs. (if core countries did, why cant we) A few of the newly independent countries were successful. These are now known as the nic (newly industrialized countries)
