Parent comes back and says the problem got worse, not better! explain extinction burst to the parent: intro sentence, extinction bursts are a common occurrence when trying to extinguish problem behaviour. The role of the tantrum was to get your attention and so your child can get what they want. When your reaction was not occurring, your child tried harder, and therefore, your child"s behaviour was getting worse. However, it is natural that it will get worse before it will get better. Behaviour disappeared and then reappeared 4 months later.
